Water Treatment Guide

Water source has a major influence upon the choice of filtration, purification and disinfection technology required. Technologies suitable for one water source may be inefficient when used on another. For example, most disinfection processes are ineffective upon water with high turbidity.

Below is a summary of technologies often considered for various water sources.

Rain water harvesting in enclosed tanks

  • Coarse filtration –  self cleaning screens or bag filter or cartridge filter
  • Fine filtration – self cleaning ultrafilter or 1 micron cyst rated cartridge
  • Tannin reduction – anion resin
  • Organic reduction – activated carbon filtration
  • Disinfection – chlorine, ozone or ultraviolet irradiation (potable water requirement)

River water or dam water

  • Coarse filtration – backwashing multimedia filtration
  • Fine filtration – self cleaning ultrafilter
  • Chemical reduction – reverse osmosis @ 10 to 15 Bar
  • Disinfection –  chlorine, ozone or ultraviolet irradiation (potable water requirement)

Spring water

  • Coarse filtration – self cleaning screens or bag filter or cartridge filter
  • Fine filtration – self cleaning ultrafilter or 0.2 micron rated cartridge
  • Disinfection –  ozone or ultraviolet irradiation (potable water requirement)

Town water

  • Coarse filtration – backwashing multimedia filtration plus bag filter or cartridge filter
  • Dechlorination –  activated carbon, sodium metabisulphite
  • Fine filtration – 1 micron cartridge filter
  • Chemical reduction –  reverse osmosis @ 10 to 15 Bar; plus deionisation or (electrodeionisation) for high purity applications
  • Disinfection –  chlorine, ozone, ultraviolet irradiation (potable water requirement)

Bore Water

  • Oxidation –  air, chlorine, chlorine dioxide – only when iron is present
  • Coarse filtration – backwashing multimedia filtration plus bag filter or cartridge filter
  • Fine filtration – 1 micron cartridge filter
  • Mineral – salt reduction reverse osmosis @ 15 to 25 Bar
  • pH adjustment – sodium hydroxide injection or calcite filter
  • Disinfection –  chlorine, ozone or ultraviolet irradiation (potable water requirement)

Sea Water

  • Disinfection – chlorine
  • Coarse filtration – backwashing multimedia filtration plus bag filter or cartridge filter
  • Dechlorination – activated carbon, sodium metabisulphite
  • Fine filtration – 1 micron cartridge filter or self cleaning ultrafilter
  • Mineral – salt reduction reverse osmosis @ 60 Bar
  • pH adjustment – sodium hydroxide injection or calcite filter
  • Disinfection –  chlorine, ozone or ultraviolet irradiation (potable water requirement)

Process Water

  • Coarse filtration – backwashing multimedia filtration
  • Fine filtration – self cleaning ultrafilter
  • Chemical reduction –  reverse osmosis
  • Disinfection –  chlorine, ozone or ultraviolet irradiation (Class A recycled water requirement only)

Grey water and Black Water

  • Pretreatment – dissolved air flotation, membrane bioreactor (MBR)
  • Disinfection – ultraviolet, ozone
  • Chemical reduction – ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis @ 10 to 15 Bar
  • Disinfection –  chlorine, ozone or ultraviolet irradiation (Class A recycled water requirement only)
